Show notes & transcript

The first overall pick in the NFL draft is the twenty-eighth quarterback in fantasy drafts. Both of those facts are true today, and only one of them will survive September.

The record: Las Vegas took Mendoza first overall in April, per ESPN, off a Heisman season at Indiana — a national championship, an undefeated year, and the most passing touchdowns in the country, per NFL.com. That is as decorated as a prospect gets.

Here's why the fantasy market shrugs — with receipts. The team he joins, verified: three and fourteen last season, with a quarterback who was sacked fifty-five times. And the team's own plan, per ESPN's Ryan McFadden in mid-June: Kirk Cousins signed in free agency, took every first-team rep in every open spring practice, and was the best quarterback on the field doing it. Klint Kubiak says the best player starts the opener, per the team's media day — and as of July, the rookie runs with the twos and threes. Nobody in that building has scripted Mendoza as the week-one starter, so neither will we.

The honest read is unusually clean: this price isn't about talent — it's about a door. We can't tell you when it opens; nobody can, and the ones who claim to are selling confidence, not data. When he plays, we'll grade what's real — in October, or whenever Las Vegas decides.

Watch: the first-team rep split when camp opens July twenty-third, and how Kubiak sequences the quarterbacks in preseason games — the order tells you more than the press conferences will. If he's one of your guys, this show exists for your whole roster — every player, every week, all season.
