Jauan Jennings finally showed up in the target column this week, twice, both times from the starting quarterback in the week's most competitive settings. In Wednesday's joint-practice two-minute drill against Baltimore, Kyler Murray hit him for a short gain on the drive that ended in Justin Jefferson's touchdown, per Craig Peters and Rob Kleifield at the team's website. Thursday's rep was bigger: a deep ball from Murray that set up Will Reichard's 46-yard field goal to close the two-minute period, per Kleifield and Peters. Against Baltimore's actual defense with the clock running, Murray's progression went Jefferson, T.J. Hockenson, Jennings — and the Jennings throw was the one that flipped the field.
That is the week in full. Jennings did not appear in the coverage of Saturday's 13-to-three loss to the Ravens, which was played without the starters, both staffs resting them after the joint sessions, per Adam Patrick at The Viking Age. For a veteran with a secure spot learning a new offense, the pattern — used with the ones in practice, held out of the exhibition — is the normal shape of an August.
The question hanging over Jennings since our June preview — whether targets follow him into a room where Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Hockenson eat first — now has its first two ledger entries, earned in situations coaches script for players they intend to use, though we will not size a target share from two practice throws. Watch next whether Jennings plays with the starters in the preseason finale and draws live targets, and where he lines up in three-receiver sets once the roster cuts to 53 on Sunday, August 30. We'll check after cut day.
