Jaxson Dart Camp Update — August 31: One of two quarterbacks kept
2026 NFL Season · Monday, Aug 31
The initial fifty-three the Giants announced Sunday keeps two quarterbacks, Dart and Jameis Winston, per the team's release, with Jake Haener and Brandon Allen both cut after the finale, per GMenHQ. Dart did not take a snap Friday, so his preseason is over and the blitz-pickup question rolls untested to the opener against Dallas.
When Jaxson Dart's week moves the numbers, you'll know — every episode, in one weekly email.

The quarterback room resolved by subtraction. The 53-man roster the Giants announced Sunday keeps exactly two quarterbacks — Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston — per the team's official release. Jake Haener outplayed Brandon Allen in Friday's finale, throwing a touchdown to Xavier Gipson, and both were cut anyway, leaving Winston the only backup, per Michael Haney at GMenHQ. Dart himself did not take a snap in the 23 to six win over the Jets — the Giants sat most starters, per Matt Sidney at GMenHQ, and the finale quarterbacking Haney describes belonged entirely to the men behind him.
That settles half of last week's watch item the quiet way: Dart has seen his last preseason snap. The other half — whether the blitz-pickup fixes hold behind a live rush — got no test at all, and no practice charting of Dart's week reached us, so the question rolls intact to September thirteenth against Dallas. The line in front of him churned on the way to Sunday: Evan Neal was cut, per Sidney, Joshua Ezeudu was traded to Kansas City for a 20 28 seventh-round pick, per Patricia Traina at Giants On SI, and the Giants kept nine offensive linemen on the initial roster, per the team's release.
The pass-catchers from his best day of camp all came through cutdown. Malachi Fields — the 50-yard touchdown target from the Miami joint practice — made the roster, as did Isaiah Likely and Darnell Mooney, per the official release, and Odell Beckham Jr. is on the 53 as well, per Josh Alper at Pro Football Talk citing ESPN's Jordan Raanan. The position lost one man for the season: Calvin Austin III tore his ACL in Tuesday's practice and went on injured reserve Thursday, per the team's announcement, with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy saying it would be a disservice to call it anything less than a blow and that the next guy has to step up and play.
Back in June our preview drew Dart in two strokes — the legs were the floor, the arm was the project — and the 17-of-21 joint practice in Miami, charted by Ed Valentine at Big Blue View, remains the summer's best evidence the project is moving. This week added nothing to that file and took nothing from it; what it added was certainty about the room around him. Every remaining question about the second-year quarterback now requires a real defense. We'll be back once a live rush gives us something to chart.
