Jordan Mason Camp Update — August 31: Still No Ballot in a Three-Man Room

Cutdown produced the first hard fact this backfield has produced since our June preview: Minnesota kept three running backs on the initial 53 — Aaron Jones, Jordan Mason and rookie Demond Claiborne — per Rob Kleifield at the team's website. Zavier Scott, a member of last year's roster, was cut, a move reported by Alec Lewis of The Athletic, via Vikings On SI's tracker, as opening the third-back job for the sixth-round rookie. What cutdown did not produce is an ordering. No source in the window ranks Jones and Mason, and we won't either.

The other half of our watch line went the same way as last week's. Kevin O'Connell rested his starters in Friday night's 34-to-six loss at Denver, per Craig Peters at the team's website, so the first-team early-down split and the goal-line series — the two ballots we said would decide this committee — went unasked for a second straight week, and the preseason ends with neither of them on the record. Mason's own file is unchanged: for the second consecutive week, his name does not appear in any reporting we can attribute. No injury has been attached to the quiet in either week.

Our June preview called Mason the frontrunner nobody will name — last season's leading rusher in a committee where Jones re-signed and Claiborne cost a trade-up — and that framing now survives the entire preseason untested. The one new page is a useful negative: three backs means there is no fourth body to absorb touches. We'll be back once there's live football to chart.
