The team's own list of roster battles never included a running back, and the passing-down split behind the questions about his role remains unreported for a second straight week.

Kenneth Gainwell's roster spot was never in doubt, and Sunday made it official in the quietest way available. Tampa Bay's initial 53 keeps three running backs — one fewer than the four Todd Bowles floated on the eve of cutdown, per Scott Smith at Buccaneers.com — and when the team's own site listed the five roster battles worth watching before the finale, per Smith on Thursday, none of them involved a running back. Josh Williams and Barika Kpeenu were waived, per Smith; Williams signed to the practice squad Monday, per Josh Crysler at The Pewter Plank, which Scott Reynolds at Pewter Report describes as part of the plan — three backs kept partly on the bet that Williams would clear. The room is Bucky Irving, Gainwell and Sean Tucker, with depth stashed behind the roster instead of on it.
The week around the room was rougher than the room itself. The starters were rested for Friday's finale, per Brianna Dix at Buccaneers.com — no report places Gainwell in the game — and the backups were shut out 19 to nothing in Jacksonville, with the run game under 50 yards and five sacks allowed, per Collin Haalboom at SI. Last week's episode asked whether Gainwell would play meaningful snaps in the finale or stay wrapped with the starters — wrapped, at room level — and whether any first reporting would surface on how Zac Robinson splits passing-down work between him and Irving. None did. That question has now gone unanswered two weeks running, and the plain reading is that the split will first be visible in the September thirteenth opener against Cincinnati, not in an August quote.
Our June preview treated Gainwell as a role argument — real, portable receiving skill capped by the clear number-two job behind Irving — and cut day confirmed the frame without adding to it: a settled veteran, never evaluated, now one of three backs in a room built lean on purpose. The role's actual size is the last open question this file has, and only games answer it. We'll check back when they start to.
