Sean Tucker's name is on the 53, and it was never really in question. Tampa Bay kept three running backs on the roster it announced Sunday — Tucker behind Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell — while Josh Williams and Barika Kpeenu were waived, per Scott Smith at Buccaneers.com. When the team's own site listed five roster battles to watch before the finale, per Smith on Thursday, no running back was among them. And the cutdown went further than survival: Bowles had floated keeping four backs on the eve of cuts, per Smith, and the team kept three, with Scott Reynolds at Pewter Report writing that the choice leaned partly on the bet that Williams would clear waivers — which he did, signing to the practice squad Monday, per Josh Crysler at The Pewter Plank. The depth behind Tucker reassembled off the roster, not on it.
Last week's episode made a prediction and asked a question. The prediction — that nothing in two weeks of August suggested Tucker's name would miss the 53 — held cleanly. The question, who fields kickoffs, went unanswered a second straight week: no outlet in the window charts the return work from Friday's finale, a 19-to-nothing shutout loss in Jacksonville in which the starters were rested, per Brianna Dix at Buccaneers.com, and no report names Tucker's usage in the game at all. The June tiebreaker stays uncharted, and we will keep saying so rather than inferring it.
Our June preview priced Tucker as durable depth whose upside was mostly a contingency behind a rehabbing starter, and cut day graded that read: the profile that survives cut day rather than headlines it did exactly that, with the August résumé — two weeks of trusted live work and the game-winning one-yard touchdown against Kansas City — as the supporting file. The contingency above him stayed shut all week; Irving drew no injury mention anywhere. Tucker enters the season as the third back in a deliberately lean room, which is a quietly better seat than the one August started him in.
