Aaron Jones carried the load against the Saints and gave one back: 25 carries, 113 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 lost fumble, and -7.8 expected points added (EPA) on the ground. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.
The fumble made that number. Up 3-0 with 50 seconds left in the first quarter, third and 1 at the New Orleans 10, he ran up the middle for 3 yards and Khristian Boyd knocked the ball loose. Chase Young recovered at the 7 and returned it 27 yards to the 34. That one play was -7.6 EPA and -16.4 points of win probability.
He made it up in the second half. At 13-13 with 1:52 left in the third quarter, he broke a 19-yard run off right tackle to the New Orleans 19. On the same drive, first and 8 at the 8 with 14:12 left in the game, he went up the middle for the touchdown and a 20-13 lead: +1.5 EPA and +15.0 points of win probability.
His 25 carries and 113 yards both topped his Week 2 game against the Bears, 23 for 105. He gained positive EPA on 40% of his carries, against 35% through Week 4, when he had 72 carries, 297 yards, 1 touchdown and -5.7 EPA. He caught all 3 targets for 4 yards.
