Cade Otton Camp Update — August 23: Absent all week with no reason given

2026 NFL Season · Sunday, Aug 23

Otton did not practice Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and did not play against Kansas City, and the daily camp reports list him without an explanation. A week ago he was the story of the joint practice; this week he was a name on the absence list.

Cade Otton vanished from the practice field this week. He appears on the absence list in each of Pewter Report's daily camp reports — Monday and Wednesday from Matt Matera, Tuesday from Bailey Adams — and he does not appear in the box score of Saturday's 16-to-15 win over Kansas City, per CBS Sports. None of the reports we hold attach a reason, an injury, or a timetable to it. Monday's report noted tight end Bauer Sharp doing the physical blocking work in Otton's place, per Matera, and Sharp kept surfacing all week — multiple catches in Wednesday's session, per Matera, while Ko Kieft caught the two-yard touchdown from Jalon Daniels in Saturday's game, per Brianna Dix at buccaneers.com. The tight end room kept producing; its starter kept not being in it.

The contrast with last week is the story. Seven days ago Otton was coming off the best practice of his camp, a touchdown in seven-on-sevens and a corner-route catch against zone in the joint practice with the Jets. Whatever interrupted that — and we will not guess — the interruption is now a full week long, which is the point where an unexplained absence stops being a scheduling footnote.

Our June case for Otton — 81 targets and one touchdown last year, real volume with the scoring due to normalize — assumed a player on the field absorbing the install, and he has now missed the week where Zac Robinson's red-zone packages were being built. What to watch next is direct: whether Otton is back at practice before cutdown to 53 on Sunday, August thirtieth, and whether anyone in Tampa attaches an explanation to the week he just missed. We'll check after cut day.
