22 to 17, Jaguars, 56 seconds left, fourth and 10 at the Jacksonville 21, Cincinnati out of timeouts. Joe Burrow threw short over the middle to Chase Brown, and Lane brought him down at the 12: nine yards, one short of the first down. −2.3 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and −26.4 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, the largest swing of the game. Jacksonville knelt twice.
The line: 11 targets, 11 catches, 71 yards, two first downs through the air, 63 of the yards after the catch; nine carries, 10 yards, one first down, −2.6 expected points on the carries. The best catch was nine yards on third and four at the Jacksonville 45 with five seconds left in the third quarter, +1.4, on the drive Tee Higgins took to the 10 and an interception ended. Four of the catches came in the second quarter, three of them on the last possession of the half. The carries went −5, two, three, one, six, one, three, −2 one. The last, on third and two in the fourth quarter, moved the chains only because of a Jacksonville taunting penalty. The −2 came on second and five at the Jacksonville 13 in the third quarter, one snap before Mike Gesicki's touchdown.
The split: nine of Cincinnati's 15 rush plays, with Samaje Perine and Burrow at three each. 11 of the 53 throws that had a receiver, second to Higgins's 16.
Back in June the preview called Brown boring as a compliment: a three-down role and 69 catches last season. Through three games the receiving half had not arrived, 10 catches in all. Sunday's 11 are more than those three games combined, and the carries went the other way, nine, his fewest, after 16, 20 13. Four games: 58 carries for 207 yards and a touchdown, 21 catches for a hundred three. One game of catches does not make a role, and it came on a day Cincinnati ran 15 times.
