Deshaun Watson — Week 3: Hurt, Then the Winning Throw
2026 NFL Season · Half-PPR Scoring · Monday, Sep 28
Watson completed 16 of 30 for 144 yards and two touchdowns to Harold Fannin, took two sacks, and ran 9 times for 47 yards outside two kneel-downs, 45 of them on five scrambles. Hurt on a roughing-the-passer play that wiped out an interception with 2:36 left, he missed one snap, then threw the 14-yard touchdown on third and ten and the two-point pass that decided a 21–18 win over the Panthers.

18 to 13, Panthers, two 36 left in the fourth quarter, second and 15 at the Carolina 29. Deshaun Watson threw deep right for KC Concepcion and Akayleb Evans intercepted in the end zone. A roughing-the-passer flag on Bobby Okereke took it away and moved the ball to the 14, and Watson was hurt on the play. Shedeur Sanders took the next snap. Watson came back for second and 10, threw incomplete to Denzel Boston, and on third and 10 at the 14 with a minute 55 left threw short left to Harold Fannin for the touchdown. +3.4 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 22.6 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, the largest swing of any play in the game. His two-point throw to Boston made it 21 to 18, the final score. Earlier on that drive, third and three at the Carolina 45, he had scrambled 21 yards to the 24, +17.5 points of win probability.
The line: 16 of 30 for a hundred 44 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, two sacks, +1.5 expected points on 32 pass plays. Eight of 16 for 60 yards before halftime, eight of 14 for 84 after. The first touchdown was fourth and two at the Carolina two with a minute 43 left in the half, to Fannin, for a 10-to-nothing lead after the kick; the two snaps before it were his own, a one-yard run to the five and a three-yard scramble to the two on third and five. His fourth-down throw on the first snap of the second quarter converted too, four yards to Concepcion on fourth and three. The longest completion was 28 to Boston. On third down: eight pass plays, seven throws, five completions, two conversions.
On the ground: nine runs for 47 yards with the two kneel-downs set aside, and four first downs. Five were scrambles for 45 yards: eight, 12 on third and six in the first quarter, converted, three, one, and the 21. The four designed runs gained two in total, the last nothing on third and one at the Carolina 15 with a minute nine left, the snap before Quinshon Judkins was stopped on fourth down. Cleveland's hundred 27 net passing yards were 20-seventh of the 28 teams that have played this week, with the Rams, Broncos, Eagles and Bears still to play.
Back in June the preview made no call on Watson: a bet on a return rather than a résumé, after two surgeries on the same Achilles and a full season missed, with a healthy tendon and a named starting job as the two things that would settle it. Week 1 gave him the job and a bad afternoon, an interception on his third throw and five sacks. Week 2 was +10.4 expected points on 32 pass plays and a win. Sunday sat between them, and it added the first time this season the play-by-play has him hurt: it records that he was hurt and that he came back after missing one snap, and says nothing about how. Three games: 56 of 82, 587 yards, five touchdowns, one interception. Cleveland is home to the Steelers on Thursday the first.
