Deshaun Watson spent the day under siege against the Jets: 15 of 33, 155 yards, 1 touchdown, 8 sacks, and -10.4 expected points added (EPA) on 44 dropbacks, -0.24 per dropback. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.
He still produced the go-ahead drive. Down 10-6 with 7:13 left, second and 11, he scrambled up the middle for 20 yards to the Jets 29, +2.0 EPA and +14.3 points of win probability. Two incompletions later, one after he recovered a fumbled snap, he threw deep left on third and 10 to Denzel Boston for a 29-yard touchdown: +4.3 EPA, +21.6 points of win probability, 12-10 Cleveland.
The last chance ended the way much of the day went. Down 17-12 with 57 seconds left, fourth and 11 at his own 19, Will McDonald IV sacked him and forced a fumble; Watson recovered, fumbled again, and McDonald fell on it at the 17. Earlier on that drive, Darrell Jackson Jr. sacked him for a loss of 9.
It was a reversal of his first four games: +21.0 EPA on 140 dropbacks, +0.15 per dropback, and a completion percentage over expected (CPOE) of +1.3. CPOE measures how often he completes passes against what their difficulty predicts; this week it was -15.6. He took 11 sacks across Weeks 1 through 4, and 8 in this game. On the ground he ran 6 times for 40 yards.
