Devaughn Vele was second on the Saints in targets against the Falcons: 9 targets, 6 catches, 54 yards, 1 touchdown, +4.0 expected points added (EPA) on his targets. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.
The defining catch came late in the third quarter, down 31-10. Fourth and 10 at the Atlanta 43: Tyler Shough threw deep left and Vele caught it for 18 yards to the 25, +4.4 EPA. He added 17 on third and 18 and 9 more to the 5 on the same drive, and Alvin Kamara scored from there.
The miss came earlier. Third and 3 at the Atlanta 8, down 24-7, a short throw over the middle to Vele fell incomplete, -4.0 points of win probability, and the Saints settled for a field goal. His 3-yard touchdown came with 1:19 left and the score 45-17.
