Devaughn Vele caught everything thrown his way against the Steelers: 5 targets, 5 catches, 54 yards, a touchdown and +8.3 expected points added (EPA). EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. Three of the catches came on third or fourth down, and all three moved the chains.
The touchdown came down 10-3 with 1:48 left in the half. Three runs from the 2 had gained a yard, leaving fourth and goal at the 1. Tyler Shough threw short left and Vele caught it for the tie after the extra point: +2.5 EPA and 14.9 points of win probability, the estimate of each side's chance to win. Earlier on that drive his 13-yard catch on first and 10 took it to the Pittsburgh 20. His most valuable catch opened the third: down 13-10, third and 11 at the New Orleans 40, a deep throw to the right for 24 yards to the Pittsburgh 36, +3.4 EPA and 15.3 points. That drive ended in an interception at the 10. On the first drive his 14-yarder on third and 6 reached the Pittsburgh 43.
The +8.3 was more than half the +13.8 EPA he had through Week 6, on 43 targets, 28 catches, 294 yards and 2 touchdowns.
