Joe Burrow had the biggest passing day of his season against the Titans and nearly gave it back: 38 of 48 for 462 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions, sacked three times, plus 3 carries for 10 yards and the winning touchdown in overtime. The yards and the touchdown passes were both his most this season. Over 54 dropbacks he was worth +18.5 expected points added (EPA), what a play was worth given down, distance and field position: +0.34 per dropback. His completion percentage over expected (CPOE), how often he completed passes against what their difficulty predicted, was +16.9.
The drive that saved the day started at his own 19 after a holding penalty on the kickoff, down 36-29 with 3:40 left. He hit Dohnte Meyers for 18, Ja'Marr Chase for 17 and Tee Higgins for 16 on third and 5, then threw deep right to Higgins for an 18-yard touchdown with 1:20 left: +2.5 EPA and 15.4 points of win probability, the estimate of each side's chance to win. In overtime he went 70 yards in five plays, with completions of 17 and 14 to Chase and 21 to Higgins on second and 1, and scrambled around left end from the 9 for the winner.
The interceptions all went to Amani Hooker, and all came on deep throws to the right. The first, for Chase from his own 44, was returned 22 yards; the second, for Mike Gesicki, came two snaps before Boye Mafe's strip-sack handed the ball back; the third, for Chase again at the Tennessee 5 with the score 21-21, was followed two snaps later by a Tennessee safety. Nine of his throws went deep right: five were caught, two for touchdowns, and the nine came to -2.0 EPA. His other completions went where he wanted: a 30-yard touchdown to Chase on third and 18 in the second quarter, +4.7 EPA, and a 23-yarder to Chase on third and 10 down 28-23 in the fourth, +2.7 EPA, before a 25-yard touchdown to Gesicki.
The per-dropback figure beat his season. Through Week 7 he had +54.2 EPA on 236 dropbacks, +0.23 each, with a CPOE of +7.3, 15 touchdown passes and 3 interceptions. He threw as many interceptions here as in his first six games combined.
