24 to 10, Chiefs, three 17 left in the third quarter. Harrison Butker kicked off 62 yards to the Denver three, and Jonah Coleman brought it out to the 30, 27 yards. That is the whole of his night in the play-by-play. No carry, no target, no touch from scrimmage. The drive he set up went six snaps from the 30 and ended with Bo Nix sacked, stripped and the ball recovered by Kansas City at the Denver 34 with 35 seconds left in the quarter.
The split: J.K. Dobbins eight designed runs for 36 yards, RJ Harvey three for 18, Troy Franklin one for five, and one Bo Nix scramble. 12 designed runs on the night plus an aborted snap, six before halftime and seven after, against 19 13 pass plays. Denver ran for 62 yards on 14 rush plays counting the scramble, tied with Tennessee for the fewest in the league this week. Harvey caught all four of his targets; no other back was targeted.
Back in June the preview called Coleman praise now, evidence later — pick one 53, a fourth-round rookie whose June notices predicted nothing — and named two things to watch: preseason third-down snaps, meaning whether he would be the two-minute back over Harvey, and Dobbins' early-season workload pattern. Monday answered the first for one week: the passing-down work was Harvey's, and Coleman's job was the kickoff. 12 designed runs is a small pie to read a third back's share from, and a game Denver trailed from the first quarter is not a run-game sample. One game does not close a rookie's file. The Broncos are home to the Jaguars on Sunday the twentieth.
