Jordan James finally got game snaps, and then he got the thing the snaps were auditioning for. In Thursday's finale in Las Vegas — his preseason debut coming off the rib injury — James ran eight times for 35 yards and added a 20-yard catch, per Matt Maiocco at NBC Sports Bay Area. The night's asterisk was his own doing: he took an illegal-low-block penalty that wiped out a touchdown pass to tight end Hayden Rucci — a score that came off the board, and not one of James's own. Kaelon Black started the game and carried four times for 28 yards across the first three possessions, per Maiocco — so Black got the start and the first drives, and James got the volume.
Three days later the roster call came in clean. David Lombardi at the SF Standard has the running back room behind Christian McCaffrey resolving to rookie third-round pick Kaelon Black and second-year fifth-rounder Jordan James, with Sincere McCormick and Khalil Herbert cut and listed practice-squad eligible. Isaac Guerendo went to the reserve physically-unable-to-perform list and is ineligible until Week Five at the earliest, per Jeremy Fowler via 49ers Webzone, and Zamir White was traded to New Orleans back on August 20-third, per Adam Schefter via 49ers Webzone. That leaves three healthy backs on the roster, and James is one of them. Two caveats keep the picture provisional: Lombardi reported August 20-seventh that McCormick and Herbert are expected back on the practice squad — nothing is signed, since practice squads can't form until waivers clear — and Guerendo's return caps how permanent any depth-chart read is.
Last week's watch line asked for the carry split in the finale and the shape of the backfield after cutdown, and both came back answered in full — the numbers above, the room above. A week ago the file said the conversation had largely moved to Black while the reporting supported something narrower, and the week bore the narrower version out: Black started, James out-carried him, and Maiocco's verdict names them together — the team looks to be in much better shape behind Christian McCaffrey than at any point since they acquired him, with both backs having shown enough on the practice field and through the exhibition season. Back in June the preview said the camp battle was the entire James case. The battle for a job is over; he won a roster spot, nobody has been reported as winning the number-two role, and that's the honest line to leave it on. We'll check in as the regular season arrives.
