Kayshon Boutte was one of the nine receivers Drake Maye completed passes to in Wednesday's joint practice against the Eagles, per Brian Hines at Pats Pulpit — and that is his only appearance in the week's compiled reporting. Evan Lazar's two-day offensive takeaways on the team's website highlighted A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs and DeMario Douglas by name; Boutte was not among them. Then came Saturday's 24 to 21 win over Philadelphia, and the receiver noise came from below him on the roster: rookie Kyle Williams broke a 69-yard catch, Efton Chism the third had a 24-yard play, and Nick DeGennaro caught the fourth-quarter game-winner, per the team's game observations, which did not mention Boutte.

That is the uncomfortable shape of his August. The June read said Boutte's efficiency was real — third on the team in receiving yards last season, six touchdowns on thin volume — but that the imported starters ahead of him turned a starting job into a numbers game, and the fork was either scraps here or a trade elsewhere. This window the men above him got louder still, with Brown catching seven of seven against his old team per Nicole Yang at The Boston Globe and Doubs expanding into deep routes per Lazar, while the men below him put game tape on film that roster meetings will watch.

No trade reporting surfaced with his name on it this window, and he remains a Patriot with one preseason game left. What to watch is the bluntest item on the calendar: cutdown to 53 on Sunday, August thirtieth, which either keeps him in a crowded room, moves him, or answers the June fork the hard way. We'll check after cut day.
