27 to six, Seahawks, four 58 left in the third quarter, second and nine at the Seattle nine. Justin Herbert threw short middle to Kimani Vidal, two yards behind the line, and Vidal went the nine yards for the touchdown, confirmed on replay. +2.3 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. On the snap before, Tre Harris had thrown a pass that fell incomplete.
The line: five carries, 25 yards, three of the five successful, +1.0 expected points on the carries; three targets, two catches, 11 yards, one touchdown. The carries: one yard and −1 in the first quarter; nine on first and 10 from the Chargers' 33; seven with 18 seconds left in the half, +15 on a roughness penalty on Seattle, which set up Dicker's 39-yard field goal; and nine on the final drive, two snaps before the strip-sack. The other catch was two yards in the last minute of the first half, and the incompletion came on the Chargers' first possession. He made the tackle on Jones's interception return before halftime, and returned two kickoffs, each with a Chargers holding penalty on the play.
The split: the Chargers ran 27 designed runs, 10 to Keaton Mitchell, nine to Omarion Hampton and five to Vidal.
Back in June the preview called Vidal a watchlist for a reason that had nothing to do with his play: he led the Chargers in carries last season when Hampton was hurt, and the role belonged to a healthy Hampton and a new signing. Week 3 brought his first carry of the season. Sunday brought five, and the first touchdown. Through four weeks: six carries for 31 yards, three catches for 25. Nothing here argues with the June read yet.
