Kirk Cousins Camp Update — August 31: No Week One Starter Named
2026 NFL Season · Monday, Aug 31
Seven days after calling Week One Cousins' job to lose, Klint Kubiak declined to name a starter at all. Cousins made the fifty-three, started the finale with the first unit and went eight of eleven for fifty-one yards against San Francisco's backup defense, and the team site still frames him as the favorite.
When Kirk Cousins's week moves the numbers, you'll know — every episode, in one weekly email.

Last week's episode was titled after a line from Klint Kubiak: Week One was Kirk Cousins' job "to lose." Seven days later the coach declined to renew it. Asked on Friday to name a Week One starting quarterback, Kubiak wouldn't — "We have three guys that are ready to play," with "hard decisions on who's one, who's two," per Adam Hill at the Las Vegas Review-Journal. No coach or general-manager availability surfaced over cut weekend, so that is the last public word going into game week. We led with the "to lose" line eight days ago; we're correcting it now. Cousins is not the named starter, because there isn't one.
Everything on the field still said veteran. Cousins started Thursday's finale and led the first unit — minus the mending Ashton Jeanty — on two field-goal drives, completing eight of 11 for 51 yards against San Francisco's backup defense — Gordon's own qualifier — per Sam Gordon at the Review-Journal. Fernando Mendoza got five drives with a modified first-team offense; Aidan O'Connell didn't enter until the final minute of the third quarter. On cut day all three quarterbacks made the 53, per Hill, and Levi Edwards at Raiders.com still frames Cousins as the favorite. So last week's watch items both answered: three quarterbacks kept, and finale reps sequenced Cousins first.
The line in front of him changed too: hours before Sunday's deadline the Raiders sent Jordan Meredith and a 20 29 seventh-round pick to the Jets for a conditional 20 27 sixth-round pick, per Hill, with Charean Williams at NBC Sports ProFootballTalk — citing Ian Rapoport — adding that Meredith had struggled in his transition to center. At right guard, Jackson Powers-Johnson and Caleb Rogers both made the roster, per Gordon, with no winner announced.
For anyone hearing this fresh, the June read called Cousins a bridge with an expiration date — a veteran whose value holds exactly as long as the starting job does, with the first overall pick drafted to end the arrangement eventually. This week the bridge held in every measurable way and lost its public backing in the only rhetorical one. Kubiak's own account of the rookie's preseason — "learning from Kirk's reps, from Aidan's reps," per Edwards — says patience, not urgency. But a job that was "his to lose" on a Friday is, a week later, a job the coach won't name. We'll check back as game week answers what August wouldn't.
