Mike Evans left Tuesday's joint practice against the Chargers early with tightness, per David Bonilla at 49ers Webzone, and Kyle Shanahan waved it off the same day: "I don't think it's anything worse, so we'll see when we get in there, but nothing that I'm worried about right now." Four days later the wave-off held up — Evans was back at Saturday's practice and caught a red-zone touchdown from Brock Purdy, per Bonilla's session report. He didn't appear in the accessed coverage of Thursday's game, which fits the pattern: the starters' participation was one Purdy drive, and the front-line receivers watched from there.
That Saturday catch deserves its own sentence, because it's the first logged rep of the red-zone connection with Purdy that showed up in spring work and needed to survive into August. One practice touchdown is one practice touchdown, but it's the first hard data point of its kind this camp.
Around him, the room keeps consolidating his job — Christian Kirk is still out with his calf, De'Zhaun Stribling came out of Saturday with a day-to-day shoulder, and the outside starting role is Evans's by presence as much as by projection. Back in June the preview said the skill file was clean and the calendar was the whole question, and weeks like this one — a flicker, then a quick resolution — are what that question looks like up close. What to watch: whether he plays Thursday in Las Vegas or is simply managed to Melbourne, and how the receiver room looks after Sunday's cutdown. We'll check after cut day.
