Mike Gesicki led the Bengals with seven targets in Week 1. In Week 2 he had none. He was not on Cincinnati's inactive list, per the team's site, and he was not targeted, per NBC Sports; his name does not appear in the play-by-play at all — no catch, no target, no penalty.
Where the throws went instead: 10 to Tee Higgins, nine to Ja'Marr Chase, five to Chase Brown, three to Erick All, the one tight end who was thrown to, who caught two for five yards, and one each to four other players. 31 throws in all, against 35 the week before. Chase and Higgins took 19 of them and a hundred 70 of Joe Burrow's 207 yards.
Back in June the preview had Gesicki as a back-end tight end, a tertiary option whose volume ceiling is set by Chase and Higgins rather than by anything he controls. Week 1 turned that upside down — more targets than either receiver, 78 yards, a touchdown, and the third and 10 that answered an interception return. Sunday was the preview's sentence in its strongest form: the two receivers combined for 19 targets and he had zero. The truth of his role is somewhere between seven and nothing, and two games cannot say where. Cincinnati is at the Steelers on Sunday the 20-seventh.
