27 to six, Seahawks, five 54 left in the third quarter, fourth and four at the Seattle 14. Justin Herbert threw short right to Oronde Gadsden for five yards and the first down at the nine. +2.5 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. On the snap before, Gadsden had caught nine on third and 13 to set up the fourth down. Two snaps later Kimani Vidal caught the touchdown.

The line: eight targets, five catches, 36 yards, two first downs, −4.9 expected points on the targets; one carry for two yards. Most of the minus came on the first snap of the game: short middle for Gadsden, intercepted by Thomas at the Chargers' 45, −4.5, and Gadsden made the tackle. The other catches: eight on third and 11 in the first quarter, short of the sticks, and a punt; five on second and nine in the third; and nine on second and one with a minute 22 left in the game, down seven, to the Chargers' 29, the snap before the strip-sack that ended it. Two more third-down throws fell incomplete, third and four in the second quarter before a punt, and third and seven late in the fourth, the snap before Quentin Johnston's 44-yarder on fourth down. Four of his five catches came after halftime.

Eight of Herbert's 31 throws, a quarter of them, led the team, ahead of six to Keaton Mitchell and five to Tre Harris.

Back in June the preview made no call on Gadsden and named the split with David Njoku as the thing to watch. Njoku's name is not in Sunday's play-by-play. Week 3 was three targets and no catches. Sunday was eight targets, the most of his season by five. Through four games: 15 targets, nine catches, 86 yards, one touchdown.
