Tee Higgins caught everything on Thursday. In the joint practice against Chicago's starters he was targeted five times and caught all five, two of them for gains past 15 yards, including a red-zone touchdown from Joe Burrow, per Dan Hoard's charting at the team's site. His own framing afterward, per Hoard: "It was real important for me... I came out today with a fresh start and just wanted to go out there and make plays." That is the most substantial single day Higgins has produced all camp, and it came against a playoff opponent's actual first-team secondary rather than his own teammates — the difference between scrimmage evidence and something closer to the real thing.
He then sat Saturday's 27 to nine win over the Bears with Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and the rest of the starters, per Geoff Hobson at the team's site, so the week's live evidence begins and ends with Thursday.
For a first-time listener, the June preview's argument was about arithmetic rather than talent: Higgins's last season ran on a touchdown rate — a score on nearly every fifth catch — that history regresses hard, sitting on a complementary target share behind Chase, so the number that decides his season is how many quality opportunities that share generates. Read against that, Thursday was the encouraging kind of rep: the red-zone score is the part of his game nobody doubted, but five targets with five catches and two intermediate gains is the volume-and-efficiency part, the piece the skeptical case says he needs more of. One practice, weighed as one practice.
What to watch: whether Higgins and the starters get any snaps in the preseason finale before the roster cuts to 53 on Sunday, August 30, and whether the camp reporting keeps splitting the red-zone work between him and Chase in the final week of installation. We'll check after cut day.
