Tee Higgins — Week 8: 10 Catches and the Tying TD

Tee Higgins caught nearly everything against the Titans: 10 of 11 targets for 155 yards and two touchdowns, worth +14.9 expected points added (EPA), what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. That is +1.35 a target. The one ball he did not catch came on a second and 13 in the third quarter, and a two-point try for him in the fourth fell incomplete.

The catch that mattered most came down 36-29 with 1:20 left. On a drive that began at the Cincinnati 19, he had already converted third and 5 with a 16-yarder to the Tennessee 18; on the next snap Joe Burrow threw deep right and Higgins caught it for the touchdown that tied it after the extra point, +2.5 EPA and 15.4 points of win probability, the estimate of each side's chance to win. In overtime, tied 36-36, second and 1 at the Tennessee 44, he caught a deep throw to the left for 21 yards to the 23, +1.2 EPA and 17.0 points. Burrow scored two snaps later.

His other score came early in the third, one snap after Boye Mafe's strip-sack gave Cincinnati the ball at the Tennessee 17: 17 yards deep right for a 21-13 lead. His 32-yard catch on third and 10 in the second quarter, +3.3 EPA, started a drive that ended on a fourth-down sack at the Tennessee 5. Three of his catches came on third down, and all three moved the chains.

Two touchdowns doubled his season total. Through Week 7 he had caught 33 of 50 targets for 571 yards, +37.0 EPA, +0.74 a target. The 155 yards were his second-most this season, behind 157 against the Jaguars.
