Tyjae Spears had three carries Sunday, and none of them moved the chains. Two yards off left guard on second and 11 from the Tennessee 46 with two oh five left in the first quarter, down three to nothing. Three yards off left guard on first and 10 from the New York 33 with eight 47 left in the fourth, on the drive that ended in the Titans' touchdown. And no gain off right tackle on first and 10 from the New York 33 with a minute 20 left, down 12 to seven, on the last drive. Five yards, no first downs, none of the three successful, −1.1 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.
He was thrown to once more, and it does not count: a short left on first and 10 from the Tennessee 35 with four 49 left in the half, caught a yard behind the line, came back on offensive pass interference against Daniel Bellinger. No targets in his line, no returns. The play-by-play carries one other line about him, a note with two minutes left in the game that he had returned to the game; it does not say when he left it. During the week CBS Sports listed him as questionable with an ankle injury.
Tennessee called 21 designed runs: Tony Pollard 17, Spears three, Cam Ward one. Pollard also had four targets to Spears's none. The backs' carries were 17 to three.
Back in June the preview put Spears on the watchlist: a head coach on record calling him one of two bell cows, a 90-percent catch rate, and nine missed games in two seasons. Week 1 was five touches, three on the last drive of a blowout. Week 2 was nine touches and the biggest Titans offensive play of that day, a 27-yard run on third and 22, and that episode said half the backfield it was not. Sunday was three touches, the fewest of his three games, in a week that began with an ankle on the injury report. Three games: 13 carries, 58 yards, four catches, 41 yards. The bell-cow word has not described the split in any of them. Tennessee is at the Ravens on Sunday the fourth.
