Tyler Shough went 14 of 22 against the Rams' defense in Thursday's joint practice in Woodland Hills, per Jeff Nowak's charting at Audacy — an efficient day, and his second straight solid showing against another team's starters after the Jacksonville session. The featured connection was rookie Bryce Lance, who caught five of six targets from Shough with two red-zone touchdowns, one of them over coverage against the Rams' starting corners, earning Kellen Moore's "Contested catches against really talented corners," per Nowak. The caveat rode along again: Shough was under steady pressure, with at least two throws batted down at the line — the same protection wobble that has shadowed every good day of his summer.
He then watched Saturday from the sideline by design. Moore held all starters out of the game at SoFi Stadium and called Thursday the first team's real game-speed work, per Pankti Parmar at Heavy, and what Shough watched was a 34 to nothing loss in which neither backup settled anything — Zach Wilson six of 12 with an interception, Spencer Rattler undone by two red-zone giveaways including a hundred-yard pick-six, per Ross Jackson at Louisiana Sports.
The real cost of the week was to his supporting cast. Rookie number-two receiver Jordyn Tyson is now expected to miss around two months, per Ian Rapoport at NFL Network. Alvin Kamara sprained a knee ligament and is out about a month, per Adam Schefter at ESPN. Center Cesar Ruiz left Thursday's practice with an ankle and no stated severity, per Nowak. Our June preview noted the organization had spent the whole offseason arming Shough, and the arming is what August keeps stripping: the quarterback keeps supplying evidence, two joint practices running, while the roster subtracts from what that evidence gets to work with. What to watch: whether Moore gives Shough live snaps in the finale against Dallas, and how the interior line looks after cut day with Ruiz's ankle unresolved. We'll check after cut day.
