Tyler Shough Camp Update — August 31: The Backup Answer Was Both
2026 NFL Season · Monday, Aug 31
The Saints kept all three quarterbacks, holding on to Spencer Rattler through outside trade interest, so the backup competition our last episode framed as either-or resolved as both. Shough sat the finale by design, and cut day answered the roster half of the interior line question without answering the ankle half.
When Tyler Shough's week moves the numbers, you'll know — every episode, in one weekly email.

Start with the correction, because it's the week's best story. Last week we framed the backup job behind Tyler Shough as Spencer Rattler or Zach Wilson, and said the preseason film had made the call harder. The answer was both: the Saints kept three quarterbacks on the initial 53 — Shough, Rattler, Wilson, per Grant Chachere at Saints News Network — and did it deliberately. New Orleans received trade interest in Rattler and kept him anyway, per Jeremy Fowler at ESPN, relayed by Charean Williams at Pro Football Talk; fourth quarterback Hunter Dekkers was waived Saturday, per Williams. Kellen Moore's postgame framing: "Both these guys are capable of playing and being really successful quarterbacks. I feel great about our quarterback room." None of that reporting speaks to Shough's standing one way or the other — the open question it leaves is smaller: who dresses as the game-day backup.
Shough himself, the starter, sat the finale by design. Moore rested him with the rest of the first team at Dallas, and the two backups made their cases in the game he watched: Rattler went eight of 10 for 79 yards with an eight-yard rushing touchdown, Wilson nine of 12 for 93 and drove the field for Daniel Carlson's winning 53-yard kick, 27 to 24, per the team's recap. So last week's first watch item — live snaps in the finale — is answered no, and Shough's last work of record remains the August twentieth joint practice against the Rams.
The second watch item, the interior line after cut day, got half an answer. Cesar Ruiz is listed on the initial 53, per Jeff Nowak's tracker at Audacy, which carries eight offensive linemen; undrafted Easton Kilty was a surprise cut, per Chachere, and the team claimed tackle Mason Murphy off waivers Monday, per Crescent City Sports. But the ankle itself got no update anywhere in the week — roster presence is not a health report, and we're not treating it as one.
The thread: our June preview graded Shough's supporting cast as the swing variable, and last week's episode said the organization spent the offseason arming him while August kept stripping it. Cut day hardened that read — Jordyn Tyson filed to injured reserve for at least four games, Devin Neal gone for the year, Alvin Kamara on the roster with no practice sighting. The protection worry from the joint practices went untested, because he didn't play. The quarterback keeps being the stable part of his own story. We'll see how much of the arsenal is standing when the opener arrives.
