Tyler Shough threw 48 times against the Falcons and the volume went nowhere: 30 of 48, 286 yards, 1 touchdown, no interceptions, 2 sacks. He was worth +0.7 expected points added (EPA) on 50 dropbacks, about zero per dropback. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.
The defining snap came with New Orleans down 24-7 midway through the third quarter. Third and 3 at the Atlanta 8, 7:47 left: Shough threw short over the middle to Devaughn Vele, incomplete. That was -1.9 EPA and -4.0 points of win probability, and the Saints kicked a 27-yard field goal. Atlanta answered with a touchdown drive for 31-10.
His best throws were the deep left ones: 44 yards to Chris Olave to set up the first touchdown, and fourth-down conversions to Vele for 18 and Olave for 23. The worst was a 9-yard sack on fourth and 6 at his own 30, down 38-17. Six yards per attempt was below his 6.9 in Weeks 1 through 3, and his completion percentage over expected (CPOE), how often he completed passes against what their difficulty predicted, was -0.2.
Four games: 121 of 180, 1,203 yards, 9 touchdowns, 3 interceptions.
