Zach Charbonnet Camp Update — August 31: Four Games Minimum, Now Official

The designation came Sunday. Zach Charbonnet was placed on reserve/physically-unable-to-perform on August thirtieth, per Charean Williams at Pro Football Talk — a designation that costs a player at least the season's first four games. Bob Condotta at The Seattle Times had the shape of it a day early, writing on Saturday that it seemed pretty clear Charbonnet would remain on the list and miss the first four games. Williams also put more of the injury on the record than it had carried before: the knee dates to his fifth carry of the divisional-round playoff game, after a regular season of 730 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on a hundred 84 carries — her figures, and they match ours. On what the knee injury actually is, the reporting splits: Andrew Destin at The Athletic reports a torn anterior cruciate ligament; Williams says only knee. We'll carry both until the beat settles it.

Note the wording on the timeline: at least four games. Reserve status sets a floor, not a return date, and nobody has reported one.

The audition for his work never really ran. Jadarian Price, listed first in the post-cut backfield by Athlon's Bryce Lazenby — a projection — took no carry in either remaining preseason game and enters the season with zero live carries; the one back who did score — Jacardia Wright, a 69-yard touchdown in Nashville on the 20-third, per Cameron Van Til at Seattle Sports — was waived, per the Seattle Sports staff roster piece. The room Charbonnet returns to is Price, George Holani, whom Condotta characterizes as the third-down back to start the season, and Emanuel Wilson. Athlon's post-cut piece put the waiting the other way around: "this offense will be even more deadly when Zach Charbonnet returns," per Bryce Lazenby.

Our August 20-third episode called the designation the week's one genuine decision point, and back in June the preview quoted the beat's expectation that a reserve-list start would cost at least four games. That expectation is now paperwork, almost exactly as written — the rare thread that resolves on schedule. The half that didn't resolve is where his short-yardage and goal-line work goes in the meantime; the preseason produced no usable read on that, and the season will. We'll check back once the games start telling us who's borrowing the role.
