Liam Coen singled out Bhayshul Tuten after Tuesday's joint practice with Tampa Bay — "a burst at the second and third level" — the second straight joint session in which he drew individual notice. Sunday's cutdown kept a four-back room around him, with DeeJay Dallas released and J'Mari Taylor waived.

"Tuten had a really nice day today. He was hitting and had a burst at the second and third level." That is Liam Coen after Tuesday's joint practice with Tampa Bay, per Riley Orovitz at WRUF, and it makes two joint sessions in a row where Bhayshul Tuten was the back somebody singled out — at the previous joint session, against Carolina, it was John Shipley at Jaguar Report calling it his best practice of the season. In a camp built as a two-man competition, the only on-record coaching endorsement of either back this week went to Tuten.
Then came Sunday's cutdown, and the roster Jacksonville announced kept four backs: Tuten, Chris Rodriguez Jr., LeQuint Allen Jr. and Ameer Abdullah, per John Shipley at Jaguar Report. DeeJay Dallas was released and J'Mari Taylor waived, per John Oehser at the team's website. Two notes on the room around him: Allen made the team despite the soft-tissue injury that ended his camp — Oehser writes that he finished the preseason not playing — so that piece of the room is rostered but was not healthy through the end of August. And Abdullah, at 33, was rested in Friday's finale in a way Shipley read as a spot already secure. Tuten himself did not play that game — a 19-to-nothing win over the Buccaneers in which the front-liners all sat, per Oehser's game report.
Our last episode asked whether either back would separate in the finale, and that question dissolved rather than resolved: with the starters resting, the finale was never a separation opportunity. The cutdown half got its answer — four backs, no additions, and no waiver claim at the position reported as of Monday, per Paul Bretl at Jaguars Wire. Back in June we previewed Tuten as a bet on a job not yet won, and by last week camp had sharpened that into a genuine two-man share, each back holding a signature week. That share still stands — but this week only one of the two drew a coach's praise, and it was Tuten. One practice is a tilt, not a job change. We'll see how the touches actually divide when Cleveland comes into view.
