Bhayshul Tuten — Week 3: Fifteen Carries, One-Yard Score

Seven to three, Jaguars, eight 40 left in the first half, second and five at the Jacksonville 40. Bhayshul Tuten went right tackle for seven. On the next snap he went left tackle for nine to the New England 44: +0.7 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and four points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, the largest gain on any of his touches. After Brenton Strange's 23-yard catch he ran for six and two more to the 13, Chris Rodriguez converted third and two, and two snaps later Jakobi Meyers caught the touchdown that made it 14 to three.

The line: 15 carries, 73 yards, one touchdown, five first downs, nine of the 15 successful, +2.6 expected points on the carries; two targets, two catches, 17 yards. The carries went 12, one, eight, three, seven, nine, six, two, four, six, five, three, three, three, one. The 12, around left end, was the first carry that counted; his first run of the day, six yards on the opening snap, came back on a chop block. Eight carries before halftime for 48 yards, seven after for 25. The touchdown came with eight oh six left in the game, up 28 to six, first and goal at the one, one snap after Trevor Lawrence ran 15 yards on third and four to put it there. It was the sixth Tuten carry of a drive that started at the New England 49 after Josh Cameron's kickoff return. The longer catch was 15 yards on second and six at the Jacksonville 32 in the third quarter, pushed out at the 47.

The split: Jacksonville ran 28 designed runs — Tuten 15, Rodriguez eight, Ameer Abdullah three, Lawrence two. The third quarter was Rodriguez's, five carries to Tuten's one; the fourth was Tuten's, six carries to Rodriguez's none, until Abdullah ran out the last two and a half minutes. Inside the New England 20, Tuten had four carries and Rodriguez three, and each scored once. Two targets out of 27 Jaguars throws that had a receiver.

Back in June the preview's line on Tuten was that the expectations were built on a job he had not won: a rookie season that finished 50-first among backs on 83 carries, with a floor built on touchdowns rather than volume, and the split with Rodriguez the whole bet. Week 1 was 15 carries to Rodriguez's six. Week 2 was 13 to six, and the touchdown from the one. Sunday was 15 to eight, and another touchdown from the one. Three games, 43 carries, 204 yards, two touchdowns. Three weeks of the same shape is starting to be an answer on the carries; the short-yardage and goal-line work is still shared. Jacksonville is at the Bengals on Sunday the fourth.
