Seven to three, Jaguars, seven 16 left in the first half, second and one at the New England 44. Trevor Lawrence threw short left to Brenton Strange, four yards in the air, and Strange took it to the New England 21 before he was pushed out, 23 yards. +1.2 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. Jakobi Meyers caught the touchdown five snaps later.
The line: five targets, three catches, 32 yards, one first down, −4.8 expected points on the targets, and nearly all of that is one throw. First and 10 at the Jacksonville 20 with 11 13 left in the half, up seven to nothing, Lawrence went short middle for Strange, and Marcus Jones intercepted at the 33 and returned it to the 21. −5.4 expected points, and −10.7 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, Jacksonville's worst play of the day. New England kicked a field goal off it. His other four targets were worth +0.6 together. The other catches were eight yards on first and 16 from the Jacksonville six, on the Jaguars' first snap that counted, and one yard on first and 10 at the 24 in the first quarter. The one incompletion was first and 10 at the New England 43 in the third quarter, with Christian Gonzalez the defender named on the play. Four targets before halftime, one after.
The split: five of the 27 Jaguars throws that had a receiver, tied with Parker Washington behind Meyers's eight. Five targets is his most this season.
Back in June the preview's case for Strange was the target column — five a game last season, climbing each year, on a new contract — with availability, about 65 percent for his career, as the harder ask. Week 1 was three targets and a touchdown. Week 2 was two. Sunday was five, last season's rate. Three games, 10 targets, seven catches, 72 yards, one touchdown, and he has been on the field for all three, which is the first condition. One of his five this week was the interception, and three games settle little. Jacksonville is at the Bengals on Sunday the fourth.
