Brian Thomas — Week 1: Three Catches, Then a Shoulder, Then Nothing
2026 NFL Season · Half-PPR Scoring · Monday, Sep 14
Thomas caught all three of his targets for forty yards in a span of three minutes of the first quarter, the last an eighteen-yarder to the Cleveland nine that set up a touchdown, then left the game with a shoulder injury and returned, per John Oehser at jaguars.com. He was not targeted again, and four Jaguars touchdowns went to four other receivers in a 34–10 win over the Browns.

Brian Thomas's whole day fit into three minutes of the first quarter. Six 17 left, second and 10 at the Jacksonville 26, Jaguars up seven to nothing: short right, 10 yards, out of bounds at the 36. Four 55, first and 10 at the 47: deep right, 16 yards in the air, out to the Cleveland 36, and the ball came out — Denzel Ward on the tackle, Bhayshul Tuten falling on it at the 41, so the play went in the book as a 12-yard gain instead of 17. Three 14, first and 10 at the Cleveland 27, no huddle: deep right again, 18 yards to the nine. Two plays later Josh Cameron caught a four-yard touchdown. Three targets, three catches, 40 yards, and the three throws his way were worth +3 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.
Then the play-by-play goes quiet on him until two minutes left in the half, when it notes that he had returned to the game. The reporting, from John Oehser at jaguars.com: Thomas sustained a shoulder injury and returned to play. That is the whole of what is known, and this show will not put a timeline or a diagnosis on it. The note is attached to the sack on third and one that ended that possession; after it Jacksonville had five pass plays, all in the second half, and none went to Thomas.
Where the ball went: six targets to Parker Washington, all before halftime; three to Brenton Strange; three to Thomas; two each to Jakobi Meyers and Cameron; one each to five others. The four touchdown passes went to Washington, Cameron, Strange and Meyers. Trevor Lawrence threw 23 times, and after the three throws in the first quarter, 20 of them went elsewhere. The play-by-play does not say when he left the field, only when he came back.
Back in June the preview's line on Thomas was a 1300-yard rookie and a sophomore collapse, with the collapse traced to a touchdown drought rather than to any erosion of role: the targets carried, the scoring rate did not. Sunday gave that read three targets' worth of evidence, all of it good, and then a shoulder. The touchdowns went to four other people, which is the drought's pattern, but a game he left in the first half is the wrong game to read that from. Jacksonville is at the Broncos on Sunday the twentieth. The first thing to watch is whether he is on the field for all of it.
