The full episode, in writing
Bucky Irving is, in his head coach's own words, full speed and full-go, with no restrictions even in pads. The shoulder that was surgically repaired after 2025 and hung over his entire offseason is, by every account out of Tampa Bay, a closed file.
The June preview built his case on a tension. Irving produced like a top-18 back per game last season while running the ball worse than almost anyone in football, dead last among qualified backs in rushing yards over expected, with a single rushing touchdown all year. Our read was that the lead role and the receiving work were the real, durable part, and that everything hinged on whether the bad efficiency was the shoulder or the player. We asked for two proofs: the burst coming back, and the health clearance turning from expected to actual.
The clearance is now actual. Per Scott Smith at buccaneers.com back on July 29, Irving opened training camp fully healed and unlimited. Todd Bowles said it directly: "He's full speed. He's full-go right now." Irving himself said the shoulder is feeling good and thanked the training staff for the road back. And in the two weeks since, nothing has contradicted it. He went through the joint practices with the Jets, drew no injury coverage at all in the August 10 through 16 window, and sat Friday's preseason opener only because Todd Bowles sat every starter on the roster.
What we still have not seen is the other proof, the burst against live contact, because the starters got their work in practice settings rather than the game. The one rushing touchdown from last year remains the number that almost has to climb, and camp cannot answer touchdown questions.
Does the June read hold? CONFIRMED — the argument was that a healthy Irving with the lead job is the whole bet, and the health half of that bet just resolved in his favor, on the record, with pads on. The talent question rides on the season, but the entry conditions we asked for are met. Next week we watch whether Irving gets preseason snaps at all in game two, and any first glimpses of how Zac Robinson splits work between Irving and Kenneth Gainwell, who had his own loud week. We'll check next Sunday.
