Bucky Irving Camp Update — August 23: Fourteen live yards, shoulder intact
2026 NFL Season · Sunday, Aug 23
Irving took his first live contact of the summer against Kansas City — three carries, fourteen yards, out clean — the proof of burst the surgically repaired shoulder had been waiting to offer. Small, but it was the exact box the file needed checked.

Bucky Irving got tackled this week, on purpose, for the first time since shoulder surgery, and nothing happened. He carried three times for 14 yards in Saturday's 16-to-15 win over Kansas City, per the CBS Sports box score, working briefly with the starting group Todd Bowles sent out for the opening drives before the game was handed to the backups. That is four and two-thirds yards a carry against a Chiefs defense playing without its stars — Patrick Mahomes and much of the Kansas City first team sat, per Pete Sweeney's game story — so it proves nothing about efficiency. What it does is end the abstraction. The shoulder that was full-go in pads by his coach's description two weeks ago has now absorbed live hits in a game and drawn no injury coverage of any kind through the week.
The room around him behaved as expected. Kenneth Gainwell got one carry with the early group. Sean Tucker did the heavy evaluation work again, five carries and the game-winning one-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, per Brianna Dix at buccaneers.com — depth-back duty by design, not a challenge to the top of the depth chart. Tuesday's practice produced explosive runs from Gainwell and Tucker, per Bailey Adams at Pewter Report; Irving's practice week drew no adverse mention anywhere, which for a lead back in late August is the correct sound.
The open question from our June preview — whether last year's poor rushing efficiency was the surgically repaired shoulder or the player — needed a health clearance first and live burst second, and after Saturday both exist on the field rather than in quotes. Three carries cannot answer the efficiency question; September gets that one. What to watch next: whether Irving plays at all in the preseason finale or gets wrapped for September, and any first reporting on how Zac Robinson splits passing-down work between Irving and Gainwell. We'll check after cut day.
