Tampa Bay's initial fifty-three carries three running backs, one fewer than Todd Bowles floated on the eve of cutdown, and Irving sits atop the shortest version of the room. The open problem is in front of him: the coach said "We couldn't run the ball" after a preseason finale with five sacks allowed and under fifty rushing yards.

Tampa Bay kept three running backs. On the eve of cutdown Todd Bowles had framed the math as "a matter of keeping four running backs, three quarterbacks," per Scott Smith at Buccaneers.com — and when the roster landed Sunday it carried three backs and two quarterbacks, per Smith's accounting of the initial 53. Scott Reynolds at Pewter Report writes that the team kept only three partly on the bet that waived running back Josh Williams would clear and come back, and the bet paid: Williams signed to the practice squad Monday, per Josh Crysler at The Pewter Plank. So the room is Irving, Kenneth Gainwell and Sean Tucker, with the fourth back one phone call away rather than on the 53. A short room concentrates the work rather than dividing it.
The environment that work lands in is the week's worry. Tampa Bay was shut out 19 to nothing by Jacksonville on Friday night, with the starters rested and the offense held to 87 total yards, per Brianna Dix at Buccaneers.com — the run game under 50, five sacks allowed, per Collin Haalboom at SI. Bowles afterward, per Scott Smith at Buccaneers.com: "I didn't think we protected the quarterback enough. We couldn't run the ball." The counterweight is at left tackle, where Tristan Wirfs took his first team-drill snaps since the camp-opening hamstring strain in Tuesday's joint practice at Jacksonville, per JoeBucsFan.com, and made the 53.
Last week's episode asked two things. Did Irving play in the finale? The starters were rested, per Dix — no report places him in the game, and that room-level answer is all the window supports. And was there any first reporting on how Zac Robinson splits passing-down work between Irving and Gainwell? No. Nothing in the week touches it. The only adjacent evidence is structural — three backs where there might have been four.
Our June preview's open question was whether last year's poor rushing efficiency was the surgically repaired shoulder or the player, and August answered the half it could: the shoulder took live hits against Kansas City — three carries, 14 yards, out clean — and drew no injury coverage since. The efficiency half now belongs to September, behind a line whose coach just said it couldn't run the ball. We'll check back once real games start telling us.
