Bucky Irving carried Tampa Bay against the Panthers: a season-high 24 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns, worth +4.7 expected points added (EPA), in a 43-13 win at Carolina on Sunday. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. 16 of his 24 carries (67%) gained positive EPA. He added 1 catch on 2 targets for 4 yards.
The opening drive was his. From the Tampa Bay 30, he ran 15 yards off right tackle on the second snap, then carried 9 more times on a 14-play, 70-yard drive: 2 yards on third and 1 at the Carolina 17, 2 more on third and 1 at the 6, and 4 up the middle from the 4 for the touchdown, 47 yards on the drive in all. His second score came up 19-6 late in the half, 3 yards on third and 1 to the 1 and then 1 yard off left tackle, 26-6 after the extra point. Earlier on that drive he fumbled at the end of a 6-yard run, and a teammate recovered.
It was well above his season rate. Through Week 6 he had 96 carries for 452 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns at about zero EPA a carry, with 38% positive; here it was +0.20 a carry, and he doubled his rushing touchdown total.
