Cam Skattebo Camp Update — August 31: Atop a four-back room
2026 NFL Season · Monday, Aug 31
The initial fifty-three the Giants announced Sunday keeps four running backs, per the team's release, and both published readings of the order — the final unofficial depth chart and the beat's post-cutdown ranking — put Skattebo first. No Skattebo line surfaced in finale coverage for the second straight game, so the carry-split question rolls to the regular season.

The backfield Cam Skattebo will lead into September has its final shape. The initial 53-man roster the Giants announced Sunday carries four running backs — Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., Najee Harris and Devin Singletary — plus fullback Patrick Ricard, per the team's official release, with Eric Gray cut, per Matt Sidney at GMenHQ. Both published readings of the order start with Skattebo. The last unofficial depth chart before cutdown, from John Fennelly at Giants Wire on August 20-fifth, had him "still number one in the pecking order," with Tracy, Harris and Singletary next and a possible hot-hand approach while Harris learns the system; GMenHQ's post-cutdown roster ranking, August 30-first, reads him as the lead back, with Singletary as depth and Harris in a short-yardage role.
What the week did not produce, for the second straight game, is a Skattebo stat line. No snap, carry or target note on him surfaced in any finale coverage we could reach — most starters sat Friday's 23 to six win over the Jets, per Sidney — so last week's watch item about the finale went unanswered, and so did the carry-split question, because nobody has published a projected split. What did move was the man behind him: Najee Harris took his first game action since his Achilles rehab Friday and walked off healthy, per GMenHQ's finale coverage — a week after Harbaugh had said Harris was "not in football shape yet."
Back in June our preview said two things carried this file — the featured role and the surgically repaired leg. August has answered the role question about as directly as an offseason can: a veteran back was signed into the room, a cutdown came and went, and the last depth chart and the beat's post-cutdown ranking both still start with Skattebo. The leg, and the actual division of labor behind him, are questions only regular-season Sundays can answer. We'll pick this up when there are real carries to count.
