Cam Skattebo ran more efficiently than his baseline against the Commanders, and lost the ball at the worst moment: 13 carries, 59 yards, 1 lost fumble, -2.6 expected points added (EPA) on the ground, plus 2 catches for 12 yards. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.
The defining play came with 2:00 left in overtime. Tied 27-27, first and 10 at the Washington 24, he ran up the middle for no gain and Daron Payne forced a fumble that Shy Tuttle recovered at the 23: -3.5 EPA, and Washington took over.
He had carried them there. On third and 2 at the Giants 17 with 4:46 left, he ran right 19 yards to the 36, +16.9 points of win probability. Later on the drive he had 9 yards on second and 12 and 5 more on third and 3 to the 24, +9.6 points of win probability. Early in overtime, a 7-yard catch drew a 15-yard face mask penalty, +16.5 points of win probability.
Seven of his 13 carries (54%) gained positive EPA, after 32% across Weeks 1 through 4, when he ran 68 times for 235 yards and -11.5 EPA. The fumble's -3.5 EPA was more than his whole -2.6 on the ground.
