Cam Ward won a low-volume game against the Colts on a few throws: 11 of 22, 102 yards, his fewest of the season, 1 touchdown, 1 interception and no sacks, for -3.5 expected points added (EPA) on 23 dropbacks. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. His completion percentage over expected (CPOE), how often his passes were caught against what their difficulty predicts, was -20.1.
The throw that turned it came early in the fourth quarter, down 13-6. Second and 5 at the Indianapolis 8, 13:04 left: Ward threw short left to Carnell Tate for the touchdown, +1.8 EPA and +12.5 points of win probability, and the extra point tied it at 13. Tied 20-20 with 4:30 left, his 6-yard completion to Wan'Dale Robinson on third and 5 at the Indianapolis 42 was worth +12.3 points and kept alive the drive that put Tennessee ahead 23-20.
The interception came down 10-0 late in the first half, a deep throw for Robinson that Camryn Bynum picked off, -4.1 EPA. Third downs went 3 of 10 for the offense.
Per dropback, it was close to his norm. Through Week 5 he had -0.18 EPA per dropback and a +1.6 CPOE, with 10 sacks; this was -0.15 with none.
