Rodriguez carried 6 times for 13 yards and converted both of his third-down carries in the first quarter, 7 yards on third and 2 and 2 yards on a direct snap on third and 1. His one goal-to-go carry lost 2 yards from the Denver 3 and Jacksonville kicked a field goal, in a 20–13 loss to the Broncos.

Nothing to nothing, 11 54 left in the first quarter, third and two at the Jacksonville 36. Chris Rodriguez went over left guard for seven yards and the first down. +1.1 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 4.1 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Late in the same quarter, third and one at the Jacksonville 37 with 50 seconds left, the snap went directly to him and he got two up the middle. That one kept alive the drive that ended in Bhayshul Tuten's touchdown.
The line: six carries, 13 yards, two first downs, two of the six successful, −0.6 expected points on the carries, no targets. The carries went seven, two, two, one, three and −2. Four before halftime for 12 yards, two after for one. The last of them was the one nearest the end zone: first and goal at the Denver three with 10 30 left in the third quarter, up 10 to three, right tackle, dropped for a loss of two. Three snaps later Cam Little kicked a 23-yard field goal.
The split: Tuten 13 designed runs, Rodriguez six, Ameer Abdullah three, Trevor Lawrence two. Jacksonville had three third downs with two yards or fewer to go, all in the first quarter; Rodriguez took two and Lawrence kept the other. At the goal line the two chances were divided — Tuten on a direct snap from the one for the touchdown, Rodriguez from the three for the loss.
Back in June the preview's read on Rodriguez was a downhill short-yardage back whose telling number was availability, about 55 percent of games across his career, signed and then sidelined in the spring by foot surgery. Week 1 was six carries with the short-yardage job attached. Sunday was six carries again with the same job, and two conversions in two tries. Six and six against Tuten's 15 13 is as steady as a two-game split gets. It is still two games. Jacksonville is home to the Patriots on Sunday the 20-seventh.
