Christian McCaffrey Camp Update — August 31: The Absence Is Over

McCaffrey's two-week practice absence ended August twenty-third, when he returned to team drills on about seven reps and called the layoff planned rest. Cut day then resolved the backfield behind him to Kaelon Black and Jordan James, with the rest of the room cut or on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

The absence that framed McCaffrey's last two updates is over, and it ended before this week even started. He was back in team drills on August 20-third — about seven reps, several of them carries, after 15 days away — per Erik C. Anderson at Heavy, and he put the whole layoff on record as scheduled, per Jennifer Lee Chan at NBC Sports Bay Area: "This was kind of part of the plan from the jump — to ramp up pretty big, get nine or 10 practices in, kind of come back down and then ramp up again so we're fresh for the duration." His own status report: "I feel great."
Cut day then did the sorting behind him. The running back room resolved to rookie third-round pick Kaelon Black and second-year fifth-rounder Jordan James, with Sincere McCormick and Khalil Herbert cut and listed practice-squad eligible, per David Lombardi at the SF Standard, and Isaac Guerendo placed on the reserve physically-unable-to-perform list with a pectoral injury — ineligible until Week Five at the earliest — per Jeremy Fowler via 49ers Webzone. Both survivors played Thursday's 18-to-12 finale win in Las Vegas: Black started and carried four times for 28 yards across the first three possessions, and James ran eight times for 35 yards with a 20-yard catch, per Matt Maiocco at NBC Sports Bay Area, whose read was that the 40-Niners look to be in much better shape behind McCaffrey than at any point since they acquired him. Whether McCaffrey himself played is unreported — the only attributed statement is CBS Sports' room-level line that the team "rested most of their projected regular-season starters," and the team's own finale recap doesn't mention him.
A week ago the open question was whether he'd practice before the finale — he did, four days ahead of it. The other half of that question, how the September tenth opener in Melbourne shapes the caution around him, drew no answer in the reporting; that stays open. Back in June the preview's worry on a year-nine back was the veteran who falls off with no warning, and the August absence read like that worry out loud. The return and the planned-rest explanation retire the absence; the June worry itself is untouched either way, and only game weeks can touch it. We'll check back as Week One comes into focus.
