Darnell Mooney Camp Update — August 23: A deep ball, then silence again

Darnell Mooney beat his man deep for a touchdown from Jaxson Dart on the very first rep of one-on-one drills in Thursday's joint practice with the Dolphins, per Matt Citak at the team's site. That is the play Mooney was signed to make, and it is also the only Mooney-specific note the week's coverage produced. In Saturday's 26 to three win in Miami, no Mooney target, catch or snap note surfaced in the coverage we accessed — the second consecutive game the recaps have passed over him — on a night when Darius Slayton caught four balls for 58 yards and Odell Beckham Jr.'s drop made the writeups, per Michael Haney and Patricia Traina at Giants On SI.

Back in June our case for Mooney rested on his 72-target season in Atlanta being the real part of his game — conditional on winning an actual role, which camp has yet to show him doing. A one-on-one touchdown is a skill flash, not a role, and with Malik Nabers now taking team reps, the target pool Mooney needs is about to have its owner back.
