Darnell Mooney Camp Update — August 23: A deep ball, then silence again
2026 NFL Season · Sunday, Aug 23
Mooney's one countable moment this week was a deep touchdown from Jaxson Dart on the first rep of one-on-ones in the Miami joint practice, per the team site. Then Saturday's game coverage passed without a mention of him for the second straight week, while the receivers around him kept making news.

Darnell Mooney beat his man deep for a touchdown from Jaxson Dart on the very first rep of one-on-one drills in Thursday's joint practice with the Dolphins, per Matt Citak at the team's site. That is the play Mooney was signed to make, and it is also the only Mooney-specific note the week's coverage produced. In Saturday's 26 to three win in Miami, no Mooney target, catch or snap note surfaced in the coverage we accessed — the second consecutive game the recaps have passed over him — on a night when Darius Slayton caught four balls for 58 yards and Odell Beckham Jr.'s drop made the writeups, per Michael Haney and Patricia Traina at Giants On SI.
The room kept moving without him. Rookie Malachi Fields stacked another loud week, catching deep balls from Dart throughout the joint practice, per Citak, after catching everything thrown to him in the opener. And one veteran left: the Giants released JuJu Smith-Schuster on Tuesday to make room for the Najee Harris signing, per the team's announcement — a reminder that veteran receiver spots on this roster are being spent, not stockpiled. Last week's roster-bubble chatter from Ed Valentine at Big Blue View got neither confirmed nor refuted this week; it just sat there, unanswered by usage.
Back in June our case for Mooney rested on his 72-target season in Atlanta being the real part of his game — conditional on winning an actual role, which camp has yet to show him doing. A one-on-one touchdown is a skill flash, not a role, and with Malik Nabers now taking team reps, the target pool Mooney needs is about to have its owner back.
The week ahead decides it: Friday's finale against the Jets is the last audition, and the cutdown to 53 lands Sunday, August thirtieth. Watch whether Mooney plays extended snaps Friday, and whether he is on the roster Monday. We'll check after cut day.
