Show notes & transcript

The Giants paid three draft picks to move up for Malachi Fields in April. July drafts barely spend one — pick two ten, the eighty-first receiver. Somebody's information is wrong — maybe everybody's.

The record: two picks and a future fourth to Cleveland to take him at seventy-four, per the team site. Six-four-and-a-half, two-eighteen, by the combine's tape measure, per Pro Football Network — Notre Dame by way of Virginia. You'll notice we're not quoting college stat lines: our research couldn't pin them to a named source, so they don't ship. What did: the catch of minicamp, a contested deep ball over a starting corner from Jaxson Dart, per Big Blue View.

The situation is an opening disguised as a depth chart. Malik Nabers, verified, played four games — eighteen catches — before the knee, and his camp timeline is still a rehab question, per the June reporting. The franchise just signed a wave of thirty-something receivers — Beckham, Smith-Schuster — per ESPN, which is what teams do when the young room isn't ready. New regime: John Harbaugh coaching, Matt Nagy coordinating, per the winter announcements. If Nabers opens slowly, somebody runs the outside routes.

Still: we won't convert a minicamp catch into a September stat line — no one honest can. Openings create snaps; snaps only sometimes create production; rookies are the least predictable input in the chain. October grades the real thing.

Watch: Nabers' practice designation when camp opens, and whether Fields is running with the first unit in preseason week two — by then it's a role, not a rep. Your whole roster gets this treatment every week — that's the show.
