Fields caught both of his targets for 19 yards: 9 on third and 13 from the Giants 2 in the first quarter, four short, and 10 on first and 10 to the Tennessee 22 on the third-quarter field-goal drive. He had 10 targets across the first two weeks, in a 12–7 win over the Titans.

Three to nothing, Giants, three 30 left in the first quarter, third and 13 at the New York two. Jameis Winston threw short left to Malachi Fields, who got to the 11, nine yards and four short. −0.2 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. New York punted from the 11.
His other catch mattered more. Nine to nothing, 10 45 left in the third quarter, first and 10 at the Tennessee 32: short right to Fields, 10 yards to the 22 and a first down, +0.7. Cam Skattebo ran 13 seven on the next two snaps to the two, and the drive ended in a 30-yard field goal.
The line: two targets, two catches, 19 yards, one first down, +0.5 expected points on the targets, 11 air yards and eight after the catch. One target in each half; one third-down target, caught, not converted.
Winston threw 22 times in his first start of the season: six to Malik Nabers, five to Isaiah Likely, four to Skattebo, three to Darnell Mooney, two to Fields, one to Odell Beckham, and one with no receiver. Two was 10 percent of the throws that had a receiver. New York's hundred net passing yards were the fewest of the 28 teams that had played by Sunday night.
Back in June the preview made no call on Fields — three draft picks spent to move up for him in April, and a refusal to turn a minicamp catch into a September stat line — and said to watch whether he was running with the first unit. Week 1 was four targets and two catches. Week 2 was six targets, two catches, and more air yards than any Giant, and that episode said the role was real and growing. Sunday the throws shrank with the passing game: two targets, both caught, both short. Three games: 12 targets, six catches, 74 yards, and no throw the play-by-play labels deep has been caught. New York is home to the Cardinals on Sunday the fourth.
