Malachi Fields Camp Update — August 31: One of five receivers kept

Malachi Fields is one of five wide receivers on the initial 53-man roster the Giants announced Sunday, per the team's official release — and all seven of the Giants' 20 26 draft picks made the team, per Matt Sidney at GMenHQ. The number that matters is the five. The Giants moved on from Braxton Berrios, Jalin Hyatt, Isaiah Hodgins and Xavier Gipson at the position this week, per the team's releases and GMenHQ's cut tracking, and lost Calvin Austin III for the season — a torn ACL in Tuesday's practice, injured reserve Thursday, per the team's announcement. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy's framing, in the same release, was the room's own: "It would be a disservice to him if I said it wasn't a blow. But... the next guy has got to step up and play."

The two veterans whose spots were live questions both stayed. Odell Beckham Jr. made the roster, per Josh Alper at Pro Football Talk citing ESPN's Jordan Raanan, after a three-catch, 53-yard finale on six targets — his first game since December of 20 24, per Sidney. Darius Slayton stayed in part because cutting him meant 12.7 million dollars in dead money against 3.2 million in savings, per Sidney, who read Slayton's 33 finale snaps as a trade showcase — a beat writer's reading, not a reported transaction. As for where the rookie sits: the only published depth chart in the window — John Fennelly's unofficial one at Giants Wire, dated August 20-fifth, before the cutdown and before Austin's injury — had Fields in the third tier, behind Nabers and Slayton at the top and Austin and Darnell Mooney as the primary backups. That sits in real tension with the number-two-receiver chatter last week's episode flagged, and this week resolved none of it: no Fields line surfaced in any finale coverage we could reach, and no practice-rep reporting reached us either — even as Nabers advanced to the first contact drills of his rehab during the week, per Patricia Traina at Giants On SI — so neither half of last week's watch item got an answer.

Back in June our preview declined to convert draft capital into a September claim but said the opening was real, and August kept making the case louder — the contested catches, the 50-yard touchdown from Jaxson Dart in Miami.
