Usage vs Production

Usage vs Production — 2025 NFL rankings, updated Sep 3, 2026. Jahan Dotson (ATL) carried the widest gap between usage and production, finishing 69.0 positional places below his snap-share rank across 405 qualifying players. Based on verified nflverse play-by-play plus participation charting from FTN Data via nflverse; Half-PPR scoring. Usage and production both through the 2025 regular season.

Two ranks, side by side: where a player ranked at his position in snap share, and where he finished at his position in scoring. Most players land near their usage. The interesting rows are the ones that do not. Finishing well ahead of your snap-share rank means the production came from efficiency — big plays, touchdowns, yards per touch — and across 2016 to 2025 those are the inputs that travel worst between seasons. Finishing behind it means the opportunity was there and the results were not, and opportunity is the half that tends to come back. This is a description of what a season was made of, not a forecast of the next one.

A dash is a measurement that could not be taken, not a zero. Positional finish needs at least eight games, so a player who missed most of the season has none; snap-share rank needs enough snaps to clear the usage floor, so a player who barely played has none either. The gap needs both sides plus fourteen games, which is the strictest of the three and the reason more rows show a dash in the Usage Gap column than in either column it comes from. Rows with no gap sort to the bottom, beneath every row that has one.

How this board is built

How the usage gap is computed

Two ranks, subtracted. Usage is the player's rank among players at his own position by share of his team's offensive snaps. Production is his 2025 positional finish by Half-PPR points per game. The gap is finish minus usage, so a positive number means he finished that many positional places below where his snap count ranked him. Both sides are positional rather than overall, so a tight end is never measured against a running back's snap count.

Why usage is the half that matters

Across 2016 to 2025, opportunity is what carries from one season to the next and efficiency largely does not. Snap share repeats at a correlation of about point six four and carries per game about the same; yards per carry sits near point three eight and receiving touchdown rate near point two one. So a season built on snaps rests on firmer ground than one built on scoring rate, and that is what a wide gap is pointing at.

What a wide gap does not mean

It is a description of one season, not a prediction about the next. A back who finished ahead of his usage may keep doing it; a receiver who finished behind his may never get the targets again. This board is where the question starts. It carries no advice about who to draft, no projections, and there are no start-or-sit calls anywhere on this site.

Why many rows carry no gap

A large share of the board shows its figures and no gap, because for those players the two sides would not be measuring the same season. Snap share is cumulative across a team's whole year while positional finish is per game, so a player who missed real time carries a depressed share against an undisturbed scoring rate, and the difference between them measures absence rather than efficiency. Rashee Rice played eight games: his season snap share ranks 97th at his position while his per-game scoring finished 5th, and calling that a 92-place gap would be describing an injury as an insight. So the gap is withheld below fourteen games, and withheld entirely for players with no qualifying 2025 snaps. Those rows keep whichever real figures they have and decline to claim a third.

How deep the board runs

Every fantasy-relevant player carrying a 2025 season, ordered by the gap. The board ran seventy rows deep until July 2026 and runs several hundred now, and the extra depth changes no rank above it: positional finish is computed across the whole population of players with at least eight games, not across whoever happens to be on this page, so adding names further down cannot move the players already here. The deep rows are thinner by nature — the further past the draftable core you go, the more players there are whose season was too short to measure — which is why the columns are shown even where the gap is withheld.
