Denzel Boston Camp Update — August 31: Struggles Against the Starting Corners
2026 NFL Season · Monday, Aug 31
The week's one new piece of Denzel Boston evidence cuts against the summer's arc: Scott Petrak reported he struggled when matched against starting corners Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell after succeeding against backups. He is on the fifty-three, per the team's announcement, and Petrak's accounting of the Cedric Tillman cut put Boston's drafting among the reasons.
When Denzel Boston's week moves the numbers, you'll know — every episode, in one weekly email.

The one new piece of Denzel Boston evidence this week is a negative one, and it deserves the lead because it is the first of its kind all summer. Scott Petrak at BrownsZone reported that over the last couple of days the rookie had faced difficult matchups with starting corners Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell, who had tight coverage and breakups, after succeeding against backups. That is one reporter's practice observation over a couple of days — not a trend, not a demotion — but this file has spent the summer recording an arc that only pointed up, and honesty requires recording the first reported crack in it too. Our June note was deliberately cold on Boston, with one checkable test: whether the first-team snaps hold when the pads come on. The update after this week is held, but tested.
Because the rest of the week kept pointing up. Cleveland waived Cedric Tillman on Thursday, with Petrak citing injuries, inconsistency, a non-guaranteed salary and writing that Tillman appeared the odd man out in the receiver room after Concepcion and Boston were drafted in the first two rounds in April — a front office clearing a veteran partly on the strength of its rookies. And Boston is on the initial 53 announced Sunday, one of six receivers, per the team's announcement at ClevelandBrowns.com. Worth saying precisely: the roster is a list, not a lineup. No depth chart or starter designation was published this window, so who lines up beside whom in Jacksonville is not on the record.
Two premises moved underneath him. His most-cited joint-practice connection was with Shedeur Sanders, and Sanders is now the backup — Deshaun Watson was named the Week One starter, per Petrak. And the red-zone usage we flagged in June as the profile's first real value still has not arrived: the finale produced 37 Cleveland points and no reported Boston involvement in any of them. The starting-caliber August is real and the beat wrote it in ink; what the profile still lacks is a single game rep of the thing it was drafted to do. We'll be back on this file as the opener nears.
