Emeka Egbuka drew 16 targets against the Steelers and too many of them went wrong: 7 catches, 48 yards, 1 touchdown and -11.5 expected points added (EPA) on his targets, two of them intercepted. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. That is a Muffed day by the numbers.
The costliest came with the game tied 16-16 and 1:46 left in the fourth quarter. Second and 10 at the Tampa Bay 37: Jalon Daniels threw short right for Egbuka, and Jamel Dean intercepted at the 43 and ran it back 40 yards to the Tampa Bay 3. That one snap was -6.9 EPA and -45.0 points of win probability, and Pittsburgh led 19-16 by Tampa Bay's next snap. Earlier in the quarter, up 16-10, a third-and-7 throw his way from the Tampa Bay 32 was picked by Daylen Everette, -3.2 EPA.
The good part came early. He caught a 2-yard touchdown on first and goal to open the second quarter for 10-0, and his 13-yard catch on third and 6 from the Pittsburgh 49 in the third, +2.1 EPA, kept alive the drive that ended in a field goal for 16-3. In the fourth quarter and overtime he was targeted 6 times: 1 catch for 4 yards, 3 incompletions and the 2 interceptions.
The volume was new. Through Week 5 he had 33 targets, 21 catches, 192 yards, 1 receiving touchdown and -1.2 EPA, never more than 9 targets in a game.
