Smith completed 27 of 41 for 247 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, and was sacked four times for 29 yards, twice on the first two snaps of overtime. He converted six third downs through the air, and an aborted snap and a 10-yard sack turned second and three at the Green Bay 33 into a punt, in a 20–17 overtime loss to the Packers.

17 all, the Jets with the ball first in overtime at their own 30. First and 10, nine 54 left: Geno Smith sacked for six, the sack split by Barryn Sorrell and Brandon Cisse, −9.5 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Second and 16: sacked for nine, split by Lukas Van Ness and Dani Dennis-Sutton, −11.2 more. A false start, a 12-yard throw to Kenyon Sadiq on third and 30, a punt, and Green Bay kicked the winner on its possession. Those two sacks were the second- and third-largest win-probability losses on any run or pass play in the game. The largest was the fourth-and-one stop at midfield with a minute 20 left in regulation.
The line: 27 completions on 41 throws, one of them a spike, 247 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions, four sacks for 29 yards, +4.3 expected points added on 45 pass plays — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. 14 of 23 for a hundred three before halftime; 13 of 18 for a hundred 44 after. The touchdown was five yards to Garrett Wilson on first and goal with two 35 left in the third, for a 14 to seven lead, and Smith drew an unsportsmanlike conduct flag after it. Third down was where he was best: 15 third-down pass plays, 13 throws, 10 completions, six conversions, including 43 yards to Breece Hall on third and 12, plus a six-yard scramble on third and four. The other two were sacks. Four scrambles gained 17 yards. His three throws of 20 or more air yards, all to Adonai Mitchell, all fell incomplete, though one drew a 15-yard conduct penalty, and a fourth deep ball to Mitchell drew 34 yards of pass interference. The sequence that hurt most before overtime came early in the fourth quarter: second and three at the Green Bay 33, up 14 to seven, an aborted snap he recovered 14 yards back, −2.8 expected points, then a 10-yard sack, and a punt on fourth and 27.
The ball went 12 times to Mitchell, seven to Wilson, six to Isaiah Williams, five to Hall, three to Sadiq, two to Jeremy Ruckert and one to Braelon Allen. New York ran 27 times for 67 yards, his own four scrambles included.
Back in June the preview made no call on Smith: the thirtieth quarterback off the board, with last season's 17 interceptions as the open question and the sack count, 55 a year ago, as the fastest September tell. Week 1 was 19 of 24 with no sacks and no interceptions, and that episode said the number to watch was how many times he throws. It was 41. The interception column is still empty after 65 throws. The sack column went from none to four, two of them at the worst possible time, and he has put a snap on the ground in each game. Two games, and the preview's two questions are pointing in opposite directions. New York is at the Lions on Sunday the 20-seventh.
